PDI-SL was established in Sri Lanka and functions in partnership with CordAid and International Alert Sri Lanka. It is a registered organisation in Sri Lanka and has a Board of Directors comprising of representatives from  International Alert, CordAid and Colombo University and those who are affiliated to the board in their individual capacities as peacebuilding and development specialists.

From 2007 to 2009 PDI-SL was supported by the Peacebuilding & Development Institute at the American University in Washington, D.C. (AU).
